Birds meet their needs on land, in water, and in the air. (McDougal Littell: pages 173-179)
Vocabulary:
1. Endotherm:
Definition: an animal that maintains a constant body temperature.
Sentence: Maintaining body temperature allows endotherms to live in some places where frogs, turtles, and alligators cannot.
Characteristics: a cool ectohermic animal's body = a less active animal
2. Incubation:
Definition: the process of keeping eggs warm by bodily heat unitil they hatch.
Sentence: Birds incubate their eggs by sitting on them.
Characteristics: most birds use their body heat to keep eggs warm
3. Migrate:
Definition:the movement of animals from one region to another in repsonse to changes in the seasons or the environment
Sentence: Unlike plants, animals can respond to seasonal change by changing their location through migration.
Characteristics: Animals migrate by instinct. They do no have to plan their journey.
Bird species live in most environment (pages 173-174):
birds are vertebrates
there are nearly 10,000 of species of birds
there adaptations allow them to live all over the world:
some live in a wide range of environments (example: pigeons)
others are limited to living in one place
many travel long distances
some migrate as the seaons change
some cover long distances searching for food
characterisitcs of birds:
have feathers & beak
have four limbs; a pair of scaly legs & pair of wings
have eggs with hard shells

Birds can maintain body temperature (page 174):
birds are endotherms (an animal that maintains a constant body temperature
mainting temperaterms allows endotherms to live in some places where frogs, and alligators cannot
a cool ectothermic body = an animal that slows down and becomes less active
less active animal:
consumes little or no food
unlikely to reproduce
moves slowly or becomes idle
breathes less
nervous system = less repsonsive
heart pumps slowly
digestive system slower
if an ectothermic animal stays cool for too long it will die
